When Do Squirrels Have Babies?
Most people are familiar with squirrels, but few wonder what time of year squirrels have babies? You see them everywhere, running on lawns traveling the telephone lines and chasing each other around the neighborhood. Some people find squirrels cute, but most look at them as yet another pesky rodent.
When people do think of wild animals and when they have babies, they usually imagine it happens in the spring and then they are finished. Though that is true of some wildlife, it is not true of squirrels. Many times, squirrels will make their nests in the eaves of our homes or even encroach into the attic spaces.

Do Squirrels Have Babies More Than Once A Year?
The short answer to this is yes. Typically, squirrels have babies twice a year. The first litter, as most imagine, is in the spring, usually between the months of February and April. The second time of the year squirrels have babies is at the end of the summer, usually in August or September. Squirrels don’t have litters that are very large. They usually only have between two and five young in a litter.
As you may imagine, when squirrels are first born, they are quite helpless and have no fur. The babies typically don’t leave the nest for eight to twelve weeks, once their fur is grown, their eyes are open, and they have the strength to get back to the nest.
What If I See A Baby Squirrel Alone?
If you see a baby squirrel alone and think it is orphaned or hurt, don’t attempt to pick it up. In most cases, the mother squirrel is close by and will be along soon, but only if the coast is clear, to retrieve her baby.
Squirrels carry fleas that can spread disease and other parasites that can be transmitted to humans, so we suggest to never attempt to pick up a squirrel unless you are a professional. If you do happen to have an encounter with a squirrel, you also should be wary of their claws. Remember, they are designed to help them climb trees. They are very sharp and could accidentally, or on purpose, cause you serious damage. This means don’t attempt to chase, corner or catch a squirrel, as they can be aggressive if they are attacked or feel threatened.
