Roach Identification Experts In Hampton Roads

With proper roach identification, a roach infestation can be resolved much quicker and more efficiently. Roaches vary in size, color and age. It can be difficult to know what type of cockroach you are dealing with without consultation from a professional exterminator like Priority Pest. Contrary to popular belief, the presence of roaches does not necessarily mean your house or family is dirty.

The most common cockroach species we find in our Hampton Roads, Virginia region are German roaches and American roaches. Whether plagued by the common German or the American cockroach, many times it may be difficult to tell whether you are looking at a full grown German Cockroach or an immature American Cockroach unless you have been trained to identify the difference.

The German Cockroach is light brown in color and is small, in a range of 1/2 to 5/8 inches in length. A home infestation of German cockroaches is not necessarily a sign of filthy living conditions but these pests do thrive in unkept homes.

In all homes and building structures, clean or dirty, German Cockroaches are attracted to heated structures like piping and plumbing and the warmth of home appliance motors. They tend to hide in the walls, under appliances, behind cabinets and under drawers. This pest reproduces at a rapid rate, with a life cycle of 30 to 45 days, and can be extremely difficult to get rid of once established in your home.

The American Cockroach is the larger and darker species and many can fly. It is also known as a Palmetto Bug or water bug and, typically, they only come inside our homes looking for food, water and shelter. These pests are reddish brown in color and come in a range of 1.5 to 2 inches in length. Preferring dark, warm and humid areas in our homes like plumbing drains, crawlspaces, basements and attics, the American Cockroach feeds on a variety of foods.

Do-it-yourself methods may not be enough to get rid of cockroaches since these are quite persistent and, once established, can be extremely difficult to remove and keep out. That’s why you need Priority Pest Services. We are professional, licensed cockroach experts and we have been trained in roach identification, removal, cleanup and preventative measures.
