What Type Of Cockroach Is Infesting My Home?

What type of cockroach is infesting your home? You may answer, “Who cares – get it out!” and we know how you feel but, actually, knowing what type of cockroach you are dealing with is the key to formulating an effective removal plan. So, the first step in any cockroach infestation situation is to determine exactly what type of cockroach is bugging you. At Priority Pest Services, that is what we do. Cockroach identification, removal and prevention is one of our pest service specialties.

In our coastal Virginia area of Hampton Roads, Virginia, we commonly hear any roach-type looking bug referred to as a water bug. When we hear this reference, most are referring to the American cockroach, a larger dark brown variety with wings. The American cockroach, or Palmetto bug, is actually a type of cockroach, yet it is very different than the German cockroach.

American roaches are the same thing asĀ Palmetto bugs. These pestsĀ can be especially disturbing due to their large size. They tend to prefer bricks, lumber and deep vegetation yet they commonly find their way into our homes. To deter American roaches, or Palmetto bugs, from wanting to take residence, be sure to move any firewood or lumber away from the home. Instead, store it far away from the foundation of your home, off the ground and covered with plastic to keep it dry.

To deter roaches, and many other types of pests and vermin, it is suggested to keep your flower bed vegetation and plantings at least 12 inches away from the foundation of your home. Most homes we visit in the Tidewater area have mulch or plantings right up to the edge of the foundation! This is not good as it makes it easier, and more enticing, for pests to enter.
